Chickens, Geckos & Goats, Oh My!

There is an abundance of animals here---from birds to reptiles to farm animals. The three most common that one will see on a walk from Hostel Hoff to Tuleeni are chickens, geckos and goats---most of them eating or scurrying about on the side of the road. All three could be behind the next bush and make a swift move which will scare the bejeezus out of you (it’s happened to me several times already---I can only imagine how ridiculous I look when it happens)! The geckos are a diverse community here---they come in all sizes and colors. Some are flesh colored and tend to blend in with the walls; others remind me of the gecko from the Geico commercials; others are very big and have yellow heads with bright blue bodies. Some chickens, goats and a cow also reside at Tuleeni, which makes for a lovely chorus of barnyard melody. Sometimes I just want to start singing “Old McDonald Had a Farm”… Additionally, you will see many dragonflies, butterflies with beautiful colors, a praying mantis taking a stroll on the counter at a local bar (if you're lucky) and dogs, also everywhere! Dogs here in Tanzania are kept by most families as guards, or security alarm systems. We have two at the hostel, Butter and Carlos---they are very cute!
